Wrap Up 2016

Ok, so 2016 wasn’t the best year for a couple of reasons. Oh boy…yea. But instead let’s focus on why it wasn’t all that bad! Some pretty cool stuff happened this year, like:

Rio Olympics: Ok, so the trails had some controversy, but hey, we did pretty well! We topped out at first with the most gold medals (46) and the most medals overall (121)! And in the Rio Paralympics we did pretty well, too, with 40 Gold and 115 total medals (and a 4th place ranking overall)! There’s nothing quite like watching your country excel in the Olympic trails to help brighten up the year.

Pokémon Go: Remember this mobile game that blew up? Love it or hate it, this game became huge, fast! It’s been downloaded 500 million times worldwide and helped to boost local business and encouraged physical activity. Though many were quick to try to outsmart that part. But hey, it was a a really cool augmented reality game that had some glitches. And if you’re still playing it Gen 2 is set to come out sometime in December.

Solar Powered Plane: Some big science milestone were completed this year too. On July 26th the Solar Impulse 2, a solar powered plane, completed it’s around the year trip making it the first ever piloted fixed wing solar powered plane to circumnavigate the earth! Though it’s not winning any prizes for speed, since the trip took around 16 1/2 months due to a battery failure from Japan to Hawaii and weather.

Video Games: This year hasn’t been so bad for videogames in general to. There was the incredibly popular Overwatch, Watch_Dogs 2, Firewatch, Titanfall 2, Dark Souls III, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Gears of War 4, Mafia III and also Batman: the Telltale series. So plenty of awesome games and that’s barely scratching the surface. Like there was the amazing game Inside or Pokémon Sun and Moon!

NASA’s Juno: The satellite Juno reached Jupiter this year! It will continue to study Jupiter and it’s moons until 2019, were it will make a controlled plumet and disintegration into Jupiter’s atmosphere so to not cause space debris. How lovely. But did you know that they scientists included some little mementos on board? There’s a aluminum plaque with Galileo’s own handwriting carved into it of him first describing the Galilean Moons! Plus Lego teamed up with the scientists and made special aluminum Lego figures of Galileo Galilei, and the roman god, Jupiter and his wife, Juno.

Recovered Artwork: In the art world two of Van Gogh’s paintings that were stolen 14 years ago have been found! During a mafia bust of all things, his early work “Seascape at Scheveningen” (1882) and “Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen” (1884/85), were discovered in Naples Italy. Interesting since they were stolen from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. It’s believed they got there through trading between the families, though everyone is just glad they’re safe.

Rouge One: Star Wars makes everything better! And with loads of positive reviews and a movie that puts the “war” in Star Wars, how could you go wrong?! I still haven’t seen it as I’m typing this, but I heard it’s great!

And if nothing else it was a great year for movies! Now I have a bias towards animated films, so here me out when I mention that we got Zootopia, Moana, Finding Dory, and Sausage Party (well, that could go either way)…because we also got amazing movies like Deadpool, Fantastic Beasts and Where to find Them, Doctor Strange and Captain America: Civil War! Plus Leonardo Dicaprio got his Oscar with the 2016 movie, The Revenant! So it can’t be all bad..right?

Well, here’s to hoping 2017 is even better! Way better. Was there anything that your glad happened in 2016?
