How to Make it with Chris Merkley

Introducing How to Make It, Noyze.org’s new career snapchat/article series. Interesting people in Cortland will share career tips and life advice on our snapchat. First up, Chris Merkley – a local musician and music producer – shares the importance of doing what inspires you.

Hey, I’m Chris Merkley. I’m a full time musician, record producer and the founder of an independent record label called Old Boy Records.

What were you like as a teen? And what would you tell your teenage self?

I was a fairly free spirited teenager with a variety of interests, from sports to agriculture and the arts. I think one of the main things I’d tell kids to consider is to be less concerned about what other people think and be more concern about what you think.

How did you figure out what you wanted to do?

I decided to go to college for landscape architecture and then in the course of that, found that my hobby of music was actually the career I wanted to pursue.

How exactly did you get to where you are now?

Without sounding too corny or cliche, basically just followed my heart.

What advice about work do you have for teens?

I would try to practice saying yes to the things that absolutely inspire you and learn how to say no to the things that don’t.

Anything else you want to add?

I would say to try to remember to take it easy on yourself and remember you really don’t have to figure everything out all at once, and that you can figure it out as you go.
