All artists need material to perform and from up and coming to well established, these guys choose to do it themselves.
21 Pilots. This band’s work is a mixture of poetry and rap that is instantly mesmerizing. Every song is written by band member, Tyler Joseph, whose lyric aren’t just catchy, but relatable. I mean there’s a song called Stressed Out.
Taylor Swift. She’s well known for writing songs about her relationships, so no surprise she’s here. And even now that the country songs have turned into catchy pop tunes, she’s still the one behind them.
Melanie Martinez. You may know her from The Voice, or her debut EP, Dollhouse that was everywhere last summer or Carousel that was used in American Horror Story: Freak Show. Yea, she wrote those. Her songs are playful innocent with a darker meaning.
Ghost Town. They have amazing artwork and awesome music, this band comes from southern California and became popular through YouTube. At one point they wrote 12 songs in 9 weeks in “Ghost Town Tuesdays”.
Echosmith. This popular band made up of siblings is responsible for the song Cool Kids you heard everywhere. And they wrote that song and in collaboration with their dad, who’s their producer. The youngest is 16 and the oldest is 22.
FKA Twigs. The tabloids know her as Robert Patterson’s fiancé, but this British singer, producer, dancer, and songwriter is really involved with creating and producing her enchanting songs. She even co-directs her music videos, though they are wonderfully eerie.
Adele. This soulful singer drew us in with Set Fire to the Rain and now again with Hello. Her voice is stunning and she writes her own songs. And she was only 18 when she broke through into the mainstream.
Lorde. This young artist, from New Zealand draws inspiration from authors’ sentence structures and credits her mother (a poet) for her songwriting skills. I mean she was only 17 when Royals came out. Wow.
There are opportunities for you too. If you want to perform and show off your songwriting skills, then you could go to an Open Mic Night at the Cortland Youth Center. It’s open to all musical talents and they have the equipment, so why not give it a go?
